Jams, Pesto and Spreads
In today's world of all-night supermarkets and ready-made everything, it's easy to forget that jam didn't always come from the store. Homemade jam tastes and is fresher than the store-bought stuff and it also makes a very thoughtful gift. That goes for our homemade pestos, jams and spreads as well. Always using the best and freshest ingredients available (and a pinch of love) we make yummy and delicious treats.

The Greek Diet and Longevity
"Our food should be our medicine and our medicine should be our food."
Multiple studies have shown a correlation between a Greek diet and a long life. The Greek diet emphasizes eating primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts, olive oil and using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor foods. Olive oil is one of the main reasons why the Greek diet is considered so healthy as it is used largely in almost every meal and every dish. This diet combined with the ancient tradition of keeping one self active, provides a proven combination for living a long and healthy life.
Greece is one of the top three olive oil producing countries, and Greek olive oil is considered to be the finest in the world.
Greeks themselves are famous for their love of olive oil, and no wonder why! Most families own their own olive trees and produce their own olive oil, typically in small batches just for the family. Greeks are very enthusiastic about their olive oil and don’t really care about quantity, just the quality matters.
They are also famous for not using any sort of fertilizers as they seek for the purest olive oil and usually compete between them. For one to get a sense of what olives and olive oil means in Greece, imagine that just on the island of Crete there are more than one hundred trees whose age is dated to the Minoan times (about 3.000years back).
At The Greek Oven we use authentic Greek virgin olive oil for all of our products.
We bring our honey from, you got it, Greece! We use it for our baklava, our breads and we also sell it in jars. If you love honey (like we do!) you will want to know more about Greek honey. Greek honey is called the Nectar of Gods. Why is it so special?
The honey from Greece is considered to be some of the finest honey in the world. Variables such as unlimited summer sun, biodiversity of the Greek countryside plus the rich Greek flora which includes over 850 species found nowhere else in the world! Earth scientists and botanists consider Greece the country with the richest flora in the Mediterranean basin, (more than 7,500 different species of herbs, plants, wild flowers and trees). Thus, with this magnificent array of nature’s blessings, the bees give us multiple types of Greek honey which is its claim to popularity and fame. Greece is also the birthplace of the art of beekeeping(apiculture), dated back to prehistoric times.
Oh, yes, and let’s not forget that Greek mythology tells us that Zeus was raised on honey☺.
We use only organic eggs from local farms*, such as Hoku Nui farms in Makawao.
It is said that eggs are the second most complete and nutritious food in the world behind breast milk. This is why we have searched and sourced on the island for the best eggs available.
Legumes are a class of vegetables that includes beans, peas and lentils and they are among the most versatile and nutritious foods available. The ancient Greeks had discovered their value very early and their use is wide spread in Greece today and they are typically consumed as main dishes. Since they are an excellent source of protein, legumes can be a healthy substitute for meat which has more fat and cholesterol.
Nuts are packed with protein, fiber and essential fats. They are also a great source of many more nutrients like Vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, manganese and selenium. Nuts are also loaded with antioxidants which help control free radicals, which on their side are unstable molecules produced as a normal part of metabolism. They are also known to reduce risk of heart attack and stroke.
Like Nuts, seeds are a vital part of Greek diet. They are high in fiber and Vitamine E and monosaturated fats that can help keep our heart healthy and our body disease free.
They are also great sources of protein, minerals, zinc and other life-enhancing nutrients. Numerous studies have shown that different types of seeds and nuts can actually prevent weight gain, the development of heart disease and the accumulation of LDL cholesterol.
Some examples of seeds that we use in The Greek Oven for our breads, cookies, cakes, lunch and all over are sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds and flax seeds.
